Center of one of the  most great civilizations of the  Old Peru, the Nasca culture was developed between the year 100 AC and 600 AC, in the actual territories of the department of Ica, by the north in the province of Ca√Īete (Lima) and by the south reached the province of Caraveli (Arequipa).

The Nascas left a simple of their great advance and development through their famous Nasca lines, the city of mud bricks Cahuachi, the polychromic ceramic and the aqueducts. The nasca civilization adored to the Kom God (creator of the world) and other  minor divinities  like the  wind and water divinity.

The village "Santiago de la Nasca" was founded by the main governor of the valley , Don Garcia de la Nasca, in the time of the  viceroy Don Luis de Velasco (1596 approximately), sharing the lands among the Spaniards that landed in this region, the name of  Santiago was given  by the order  of the viceroy Don Garcia Hurtado de Mendoza, in honor the patron  (Santiago Ap√≥stol)  of the Augustine  monks, whose congregation had been installed in the village.

It is said that it was in Nasca that took place the first battle for the independency on October 14, 1820. A column of  military  commanded by the Lieutenant colonel Manuel Rojas, leaving from Pisco (where the liberating forces of San Martin landed) toward Ica, moving to the hacienda of Changuillo where passed the night and the following day at 5 in the afternoon they entered to Nasca  by Cuncumayo defeating to the "Realists" soldiers.

Since the independence in 1821, Nasca is considered as a town  of Ica. It is in 1885 that reach the category of district. In 1888, Nasca ceramic is exhibited in Berlin ‚ÄďGermany. In 1905, the German archaeologist Max Uhle started studies of the nasca culture. In 1929 the lines are discovered by the Peruvian archeologist Toribio Mejia Xespee and after that, they were saw by the musician and Peruvian archaeologist Paul Kosok who communicated the discovered to Maria Reiche. The famous lady of the pampas, arrived in Nasca in  1941.

On January 23, 1941 Nasca became a province  (9300 law).The ingenio, district of Ica (since 1917) passed to Nasca. It was created the new district of Changuillo in 1945 followed by the district of Marcona in 1955. It was in 1984 that was given the level of district to the town  Vista Alegre.

Because the city is located near the Nasca plates, tremors and earthquakes are frequents (1914,1942 and 1996). They caused many destruction to the houses and structures. After the last reconstruction, Nasca  is a most modern city with hotels that host tourist that arrive from many parts of the world to enjoy its wonders.
